Power Steering Pump
Since the original power steering pump had a bent pulley and bent shaft it needed to be replaced. Chrysler used more than one style on the 440 engines, but we had the small Thompson (TRW) style pump with the rear bolt at the 2-o’clock position and a solid 5″ pulley. The pump is identifiable by looking at the front of the pulley shaft; it will be flat, with no hole or hex bored into it. It’s also designed to fit our mounting bracket and power steering lines. These pumps aren’t available new, so finding a competent rebuilder is necessary (and a bit of a challenge). The parts stores offer a close look-alike, the Federal pump, however, there are subtle differences and it is not a direct bolt-in replacement (ex: bolt at 3 ‘clock). The goal was to have an original set up so future maintenance will be easy and all belts and power steering lines are direct replacements and nothing is hard to service.
